Morehead City, NC — Crystal Coast Compass
Captain Mark Chambers of Due South Sportfishing reported solid offshore conditions and a developing dolphin bite out of the Crystal Coast on April 15.

Conditions
The crew found beautiful blue water offshore, with temperatures holding steady at 76.5°F.
Water Color: Deep blue
Water Temp: 76.5°F
Grass: Light scattered grass, no defined weed lines
Fishing efforts began just south of the Big Rock in approximately 50 fathoms, before pushing further offshore in search of cleaner water and better life.
The Bite
After working the area, the crew moved offshore and found mahi-mahi (dolphin), taking advantage of scattered life despite the lack of strong grass lines.
The key was staying mobile and adjusting to conditions—a classic spring offshore pattern along the Crystal Coast.
What Worked
Baits: Ballyhoo rigged with sea witches
Hot Colors:
Blue & White
Red & Black
These color combinations produced consistent action once fish were located.
Tackle & Setup
The crew ran a proven offshore spread including:
Shimano Tiagra 50s
Shimano Talica 25s
A reliable setup for handling dolphin and other Gulf Stream species this time of year.
Where

Captain’s Take
“Water was a beautiful deep blue. No big grass lines, but there was enough life out there to stay on the fish. Had to move a bit, but we found them.”
